Today, PCR-grade accuracy needs hundreds of thousands of pounds of equipment, specially trained staff, hours of bench time and mains power. This relegates the best diagnostic technology to centralised laboratories, with results often arriving days after treatment has begun. ProtonDx was founded in 2020, out of a collaboration between engineering, medicine and molecular biology that had already been running for over a decade inside Europe's top engineering university
